SHOULD YOU DIY OR ENGAGE A PROFESSIONAL? When to pick up the paintbrush vs the phone.

Happy Friday, Honey’s! What are your weekend plans? If your answer includes anything that starts with building, painting, or remodeling - we’re gonna need you to drop the hammer and slowly put your hands in the air. Listen, we love a good home project just as much as the next HGTV binge-watcher. There’s nothing like the thrill of a fresh can of paint and a “before” photo ready for transformation glory. But here’s the thing: not all DIYs are created equal - and some of them will cost you more time, money, and sanity than they’re worth to begin with. So, before you spend your Saturday covered in dust and your Sunday watching "How to Fix..." YouTube tutorials, let’s break it all down: What’s totally doable yourself - and what’s better left to the pros (aka, us and our trusted crews).

DIY-able (Proceed with Caution)

Let’s talk about the projects you can totally handle - and actually enjoy doing. These are the low-risk, high-reward refreshes that can give your space a quick glow-up without dragging you into a spiral of dust, regret, and five emergency trips to the hardware store. You just need to know where to start....and also, where not to.

  1. Painting (Kind Of)

What are we tackling this time - cabinets, walls, the ceiling? (Finally, the ceiling gets its moment.) In all se

riousness, painting sounds like a simple task we’ve all been training for since kindergarten. Just stay in the lines - it can’t be that hard, right? Here’s the thing: painting can be easy in theory, but only if you follow the right steps. That means knowing how to transition between light and dark colors, understanding how different surfaces react to paint, and never - ever - skipping the prep work. A flat wall? We have faith in you. Your authentic walnut cabinets or vaulted ceiling? We're here to help choose the perfect color and have the professionals do it the right way.

  1. Swapping Hardware

You’ve definitely got this one! It’s a simple upgrade with big payoff - just make sure you measure twice, jot down the right sizes, and have the tools to actually finish the job (no one wants a rogue knob situation). Oh - and please, don’t strip the screws or mix and match the hardware - unless it’s intentional (and stunning).

  1. Styling Shelves or Coffee Tables

Just remember - great styling doesn’t happen overnight. If you want that collected, timeless, elevated feel, your decor should be curated, not crammed. Take your time finding the right pieces that reflect your style and tell a story (no pressure, coffee table book). One thing’s for sure: you don’t want your coffee table looking like you panic-bought everything from the same aisle at Target. Mix it up. Layer it in. Let it breathe.

  1. Hanging Art

We’ve said it before, and we’ll say it again: eye level is everything. If you own a level, you’re already halfway to success. But if you're attempting a full gallery wall, working around weird outlets, or trying to make six frames feel “effortlessly collected” instead of “accidentally crooked” ... maybe phone a friend. Or better yet, call us!

Hire It Out, Honey

Now, on to the where not to start! Step away from the power tools. No, seriously… like right now. Let’s press pause on that devilish smirk you have side-eyeing your mudroom, dreaming of shiplap and storage solutions. Take a breath and ask yourself: Is this actually realistic? Considering you’re here, reading a blog post titled “Should You DIY or Just Call Us Already?” ... we’re gonna go with no. These are the projects that look deceptively simple - but trust us, they’re the ones that can spiral fast, blow your budget, and leave you wondering why you didn’t just call a professional in the first place.

  1. Space Planning (What's the Plan?)

First things first - this is step one to any home improvement. Plan, plan, and then… plan again. We have a tried-and-true process that takes your vision and turns it into reality - no stress, no guesswork, and definitely no heavy lifting on your end. Because here’s the thing: buying furniture without a layout is like grocery shopping when you’re starving. It’s chaotic, wasteful, filled with regret - and usually ends with you sitting on the floor with a snack, wondering how it all went so wrong. Let’s skip that spiral, call us first!

  1. Lighting Layouts & Selections

If we could beg you not to DIY one thing - it’s this. Lighting can make or break a space. It’s not just about choosing something pretty - it's the placement, the scale, the brightness, the bulb temperature (yes, that matters - a lot!), and how it all plays with your finishes and layout. Done right, lighting sets the mood and elevates everything. Done wrong? It can make even the most beautiful space look flat, cold, or just... off. For the love of light - take that random pendant out of your Amazon cart and call in the professionals.

  1. Window Treatments

If you only measure once, you’ll definitely cry twice: Once when they arrive - and again when you try to install them. The space around your window matters just as much as the window itself. Height, width, fabric weight, lining, mounting - these details can make the difference between a space that feels custom and curated… and one that looks like a college budget, dorm room upgrade. You need a clear vision, the right materials, and precise measurements before you even think about placing an order. Save yourself the tears - and the returns, give us a buzz!

  1. Built-Ins

Under any and all conditions, we strongly advise against picking up a table saw or knocking out a wall. We love a creative project and confidence, but built-ins require thoughtful planning, precise measurements, and pro-level execution. These aren’t just “cut some wood and hope for the best” situations. And if you do consider yourself a pro… then what are you still doing here?

  1. Vacation Property Design

Let’s just refer back to… literally all of the above. And then some. Because tackling your vacation rental design solo? That’s exactly what it’ll feel like - overwhelming, expensive, and full of “oops” moments.

If you’re aiming for a space that feels elevated, luxurious, and guest-ready - not a patched-together, profit-chasing side hustle - then you'll want to do it right the first time. This isn’t a craft project. It’s a business. When you hire us, you’re not just getting great design - you’re getting a strategic partner. One who designs with ROI in mind - from aesthetic choices and guest flow to durability and long-term profitability.

Weekend Warrior...ish

So, how are you feeling? Confident? Love that for you! Not-so-confident? That’s fine - because we are! We’re not here to crush your DIY dreams - we’re just here to make sure they don’t spiral into costly mistakes and design nightmares. So go ahead, hang those family photos, paint the nursery, swap out a few cabinet knobs. But for everything else? You’ve got our contact info - because your weekend deserves better.
